A Weekend Adventure

A few weeks ago, Zachary and I heard about the Key West Express. Key West Express gets you to Key West without having to drive! They have two boats and one departs from Fort Myers Beach and the other departs from Marco Island. They sail out nearly every single day, but be sure to check their calendar before making any plans.

Pricing starts at $125 a person, you save yourself many, many HOURS of driving to the Keys. He had one whole weekend off so we jumped at the chance to go.

Fort Myers Beach

We chose to depart from Fort Myers Beach. It was just about 45 from where we were staying at the time. Boarding starts at 7am and departs at 8:30. Arriving just shortly after 7, we found prime real estate on the second floor. On the second floor you can choose to sit inside with tables or sit outside in rows of seats for some fresh air. There is a third floor that is all outside with row seating.

Sit back and enjoy!

They have a full service bar and light food available as well. The trip itself takes about 3.5 hours. You’ll arrive at Key West around noon. Our trip to Key West was pretty good. I had a Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich from the food bar. About halfway there I started to feel queasy. This was actually my first experience riding inside a big boat. With an hour left to the trip, I went out on the deck and laid back and tried to snooze off the queasiness until we arrived.

Time to head home

They start boarding at 5pm and departs at 6:30. What they don’t tell you is that some people start lining up around 4pm. By the time we started to line up at the terminal around 4:30 and there were at least 100 people in front of us. If you are one that likes to get a good seat then get there earlier. On the way home, I personally felt the trip was rocky and I was hit with nausea much sooner. I fought it off for as long as I could, but ended up taking a Dramamine that we picked up earlier that day before leaving Key West. I spent the rest of the trip snoozing off the nausea. We ended up arriving around 9:30 at the Key West Terminal in Fort Myers Beach.

In the end, due to my newly discovered sea sickness, I won’t be taking the Key West Express again, but I loved being to save myself from driving there!
